2016-17 Fulbright U.S. Student Top ProducerClaremont, Calif. (February 27, 2017)—For the ninth year, Pitzer College has been named a top producer of US Fulbright students among bachelor’s institutions by The Chronicle of Higher Education. The Chronicle annually highlights top-producing institutions based on information provided by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Pitzer’s fifteen 2016-17 student Fulbright fellows—14 seniors and one alumna—won awards to teach English or conduct research in ten countries: Bulgaria, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, Spain, Taiwan and Vietnam. Only one bachelor’s institution—Smith College—received more 2016-17 student Fulbrights. The 2016-17 Fulbright fellows were announced last spring.

Pitzer College received as many 2016-17 student Fulbrights as major research institutions such as Cornell University, which has approximately 14 times more undergraduates than Pitzer. The combined student Fulbright total for three Claremont Colleges—Pomona College (15) and Scripps College (5)—came to 35, surpassing student Fulbrights at any one research institution such as Harvard, Stanford or Yale universities.

Since 1994, Pitzer students and alumni have won 231 student Fulbright grants.

The Fulbright US Student Program operates in more than 140 countries throughout the world. Since its inception in 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 370,000 participants—chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential—with the opportunity to exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
