Africana Studies Event: Dr. LaShawn Harris – “Madame Queen of Policy: Stephanie St. Clair, Harlem’s Numbers Racket & Community Advocacy”

November 2, 2016 @ 4:15 pm - 5:45 pm

Free

This talk places the Harlem numbers banker Madame Stephanie St. Clair at the center of one of New York’s most popular underground amusements: the numbers game. An examination of St. Clair complicates masculine representations of Harlem’s numbers enterprise and disrupts the view that urban black women did not figure prominently in the city’s gambling racket. More importantly, St. Clair’s status as an affluent and well-respected numbers banker reveals that the city’s illegal gambling enterprise offered just as many economic opportunities to women as it did to men.
