Talk: Anarchism and the Black Freedom Struggle in the United States

March 3 @ 12:00 pm

Andrew Cornell

How have anarchists operating in the United States related to the freedom struggles of African Americans? How have movements opposed to white supremacy and structural racism shaped anarchists strategies and theories of power? This talk tracks connection between these radical traditions from the Progressive Era to the civil rights movement and from the 1960s counter-culture to contemporary organizing against police violence and the Trump administration.

Andrew Cornell is the author of Unruly Equity (University of California Press, 2016) and Oppose and Propose! Lesson from Movement for a New Society (AK Press, 2011). Dr. Cornell is a visiting professor at Williams College and previously taught at Haverford College and Universite Stendhal-Grenoble.
