Meet the Staff

Robin Thompson

Robin Thompson, Director, joined Pitzer College in 2012 and oversees the day-to-day operations of the office, administering over $20 million in financial aid funding annually. She is actively involved with the state, regional and national financial aid associations.  Robin currently serves as an elected council member on the College Board’s Western Regional Council and has previously served on the executive board of the California Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (CASFAA). Robin has moderated and presented interest sessions at regional and national conferences, covering topics related to federal policy, college affordability, professional advancement in higher education, and veteran’s benefits.  While serving on CASFAA, Robin partnered with the College Board to develop an Institutional Methodology primer that has been made available to financial aid professionals in both California and Washington state and continues to be active in training staff on institutional methodology. Robin earned her BA degree in history from Pomona College and later earned her MBA that focused on strategy and leadership from Claremont Graduate University.

Maryville Tuzon

Maryville Tuzon, Associate Director, joined Pitzer College in January 2013 after working at Cal Poly Pomona University. Maryville started her career in financial aid as a federal work-study student at Azusa Pacific University and continued to gain work experiences from the public and private institutions in higher education after earning her degree.  Maryville’s responsibilities include managing the Federal Pell Grant and Cal Grant Programs, reconciling the Direct Loan Programs, completing financial aid surveys, maintaining the data in the financial aid system, supervising the Financial Aid Assistant and meeting with students and their families to finance an education at Pitzer College. During her spare time, Maryville enjoys spending time with her family and friends as well as training for half marathons.

Catherine Acosta

Catherine Acosta, Assistant Director, was born and raised in Sanger, California and graduated from Sanger High School. She is a Pitzer alumna and earned her combined degree in Organizational Studies and Sociology. While at Pitzer, Catherine worked as a student assistant in both the Office of Admissions and the Office of Student Affairs. Catherine’s day-to-day operation includes managing outside scholarships, processing educational loans and meeting with students and their families to discuss how to finance an education at Pitzer College. In addition, Catherine oversees the Federal Work-Study Program and manages the printed and electronic communications for the Financial Aid Office.  When not at work, Catherine enjoys reading, baking and spending time with her family (especially her nieces).

Hernely Bonilla, Financial Aid Assistant

Hernely Bonilla, Financial Aid Assistant, was born and raised in a Dominican household in Brooklyn, New York and lived in the East Coast for most of her life.  She attended Pitzer College and graduated class of 2016 with a degree in Sociology.  During her time at Pitzer, Hernely was involved with Latinx Student Union and the Claremont Women’s Rugby Team.  Presently, Hernely is the first point of contact in the Financial Aid Office and helps students and their families throughout the application process. She answers general questions and coordinates the operational needs of the office.  In addition, Hernely oversees the day to day operations of the Federal Work-Study Program.  When not at work, you may find her at the library leisure reading or hanging out in Downtown Los Angeles enjoying a plethora of activities.

Lydia Plasencia, Financial Aid Coordinator

Lydia Plasencia, Financial Aid Coordinator, was born and raised in Southern California and graduated from Chaffey High School in Ontario, California. She graduated with her BA from Pitzer College in May 2013 as a New Resource student, with a major in Chicano/a Studies and a minor in Gender & Feminists Studies. Lydia has worked for the Admission Office since 2005 and recently accepted a job in the financial aid office in December 2016.   In her free time she enjoys scrapbooking, going to the movies, attending free live music concerts in her community, and, above all, she loves spending time with her kids.
